Match Report: From the Irish Times (Thanks to Steve Bell for Report and teams etc)

"Unimpressive, newly promoted English First Division side Leeds United needed a late goal from veteran striker Imre Varadi to beat unfortunate Shelbourne in a friendly before a 7,000 crowd at Tolka Park last night."

"In an opening half that flowed excitingly from end to end with much good football, Shelbourne had the clearest chance when Paul Newe really ought to have scored having been put through by Joe Reynolds' splendid pass in the eighteenth minute. However, he pushed the ball too far ahead and John Lukic, the Leeds goalkeeper, smothered it safely."

"Leeds produced their best chance of the half in the thirty-sixth minute when a Lee Chapman volley went narrowly over the crossbar from Mike Whitlow's perfect cross."

"Newe again came close when sending a powerful header inches wide from an Ian Hill cross seven minutes after the interval. Shelbourne's Padraig Dully had a fine effort saved by substitute goalkeeper Mervyn Day in the sixty-eighth minute before Leeds struck the winning goal ten minutes from time."

"Gary Speed played the ball through for substitute Varadi and he had the strength to shrug off the challenge of Anto Whelan to score with an angled drive from close range."
